FAQ

Is this the same as the SAFD's Fight Director Workshop (FDW) for certification as an Associate Fight Director?

It is not! The Fight Director Training Workshop is not officially connected to the SAFD's FDW, and is not a prerequisite for future FDW attendance.  However, the content provided should provide you with some extremely useful skills and foundation for future attendance at the SAFD's FDW, should you be interested in pursuing it. The Fight Director Training workshop is focused on building your choreographic tool kit, and no formal assessment or certification is incorporated into the curriculum.

Do I need to attend all five days?

Yes. This workshop involves multiple work sessions to practice your process of developing and refining choreography, and relies heavily on the presence of the entire cohort.  Admission preference will be given to those with no conflicts over the workshop duration.

Do I need prior choreography experience?

This workshop is designed for the early- to mid-career fight director or choreographer. As such, some prior choreography experience is preferred, but not required.  Significant stage combat training across a variety of disciplines is recommended.

If I attended the Summer Sling's Fight Choreographer's Track in 2014-2019, or its Fight Director's Intensive in 2024, should I attend the FDTW?

You absolutely are welcome to, and we'd love to have you! It will certainly feel like a different workshop, both in structure, material covered, and teaching styles. Further fight director training is always a significant boon to becoming a better fight director, and the more voices and teachers you can learn from, the more positive impact it can have for your future fight direction work.

If I attended the Summer Sling's Fight Choreographer's Track in 2023 with you, should I attend the FDTW?

You are absolutely welcome to, and we'd love to have you back! It will have a very similar structure to that workshop, having the same leadership, however, we will have a different slate of guest instructors with some additional master classes, your assigned scene to choreograph will be different, and your cohort will be different, plus there is an extra day offered this time to allow us to provide further instruction and choreographic time, so your experience should definitely be a new one!
